The following are some of the most common questions I get in teaching English in Colombia. Although not a complete list, answers do not provide EFL brief idea on opportunities here. I lived and taught in Colombia since 1995 and am currently teaching at a large university in Cali.

Q: Do you a list of schools EFL in Colombia or know where I can find one?

A: You will find useful information for teaching English in Colombia, in an online article published by Transitions Abroad magazine: target = "_new" rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.transitionsabroad.com/publications/magazine/0205/teachcolumbia.shtml"> http://www.transitionsabroad.com/publications/magazine/0205/ teachcolumbia.shtml

Q: I am particularly interested in spending time in Cartagena. I wonder if
you may be able to advise me or point me in the right direction.

A: In Cartagena, you can contact all the schools there, directly reach, since it is a relatively small city based solely on tourism. Unemployment is very high, there unfortunately. You should contact regular primary and secondary schools.

Q: I'm starting to get the impression that perhaps Cartagena can not have many opportunities. Your comment about unemployment is high does not imply that there is much demand for teachers of English (for adults) in the city? I'm not being very successful finding adults in educational settings Cartagena.

A: With nearly 80 percent unemployment, Cartagena may not be right for you. Beggars, thieves, swindlers, and a vast army of poor always around you. Of course not you can go to the beach that the city is famous for there, because I know you're a "tourist" with the money available and will be absolutely miserable after the first 500 or so beggars have besieged in less than a couple of hours. Not much of a holiday now, I fear. Sorry.

Q: I understand you've written a series of articles about teaching English in Colombia, could you tell me in the right direction?

A: Your best chance will be in Bogota, the capital, with over 75 schools, colleges and universities to choose from. Cali has some forty years these options. If you want to be on the coast, you can try to Barranquilla. The institute language in college is recruiting EFL teachers, continuously and is online. It is the University of North English site is at:

Q: What is the best time of year to go find a job in Colombia?

A: As for work is concerned; July to August should be pounding the pavement. The framework for the next time it is best early to mid January. Another period critical to look for work from May to June. Most importantly, choose where to live and work, or making a pilot trip to uncover leads and information in a few cities.

Q: How much money do you think you should have before traveling to Colombia?

A: Try to have enough money so that more tide, at least three months of savings to give you a break, but saving even a month might be enough if you find something fairly quickly. Just look at the exchange rate U.S. dollars Colombian pesos. Factor in the cost of living per month and you will probably find an approximate amount of savings that are needed. You can compile a figure more accurate when reviewing http://www.tefl.com by its cost of Bogota City Guide.

Q: Is there anything else you could suggest to me as a new certificate EFL / ESL teacher?

A: After a bit of land tenure in Colombia you have other options, especially if your Spanish is passable. Also consider Spain, Mexico (my favorite), Ecuador, Chile and other Spanish speaking countries. If not set in another of those, Turkey, Indonesia and China, along with other Asian countries pay very well and offer good opportunity for new teachers native speakers of English as a foreign language.
