Hunting Properties For Lease
Any ideas for making a gate using cable and railroad ties?
It’s to block access onto my hunting lease. The roads leading onto the property are about 30ft wide.
sure- dig holes for the ties about 3-4 feet deep, about 10 feet apart, put the ties in, and in each hole throw a bag or two of quickcrete(you can throw it in dry- and dump a bucket of water down there, and wait a half an hour or so to plumb the ties up and backfill) bore holes through the centers of the ties at whatever height you want to (depends on how many cables you’re going to run-I’d run 2-and I’d use 1/2 inch cable-find someone who’s got a crane and see if they’ve got cable that they’ve taken off of the machine, or a quarry or gravel pit that has draglines…they replace their cables ever few years. And that stuff is TOUGH) do this for all but the last two ties-through those get two fairly good sized eye bolts. run your cable through, starting on one end, loop the cable through the tie, and back to itself. Attach the cable to itself with two cable clamps per loop. With a hammer, beat the crap out of the threads that are left exposed after of the nuts(to make it impossible for someone with a wrench to take it apart). Thread the cable through the next two ties. Just short of the eye bolt in the fourth tie, make another loop in both cables and do the little trick with the cable clamps. Red Loctite wouldn’t be a bad idea on the threads either. Now, with a small chunk of chain(small enough to go through both the eye bolt and the loop) pull the cables tight and secure the chain together with padlocks.
