Brown bears are considered by many experts as the most aggressive of all types of bears. Its aggressive behavior is a natural instinct derived from their size: they are too large to avoid the danger of climbing trees, and historically compete with other large predators for food. The IGBC is composed of members of the U.S. Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service. the Bureau of Land Management, and the Geological Survey. Other representatives are from wildlife agencies of Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. The IGBC has become the ideal model for agencies coordination and cooperation in the recovery efforts in multiple jurisdictions covering the brown bear habitat.
The four objectives IGBC main decision-makers make top level in a coordinated effort to recover grizzly bears through policies and procedures, to coordinate the management and research, to implement the Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan, and to implement and monitor the management and research activities of all recovered brown bear. Today, biologists estimate that the population has doubled and grizzly bears are believed to increase their numbers in most ecosystems recovery. In 2007, were removed from the Endangered Species List.
In the 25 years of its existence, the IGBC has identified and established five major grizzly bear ecosystems, several subcommittees and task in-depth research to learn and teach effective education and outreach programs. Their education and disclosure teaches how to avoid or minimize bear-human conflicts, as well as suitable instructions for storing food and garbage management, internal management and livestock grazing.
