To engage in service projects – Suggestions?

I am a high school that is seeking to become more involved in some type of project service. I already participate in community service through school, but everything is small scale, local material. (Breakfast, Easter eggs, etc.) Some clubs occasionally participate in fundraising for large organizations, but beyond the funds that actually do nothing. I want to start doing something … important. I'm not saying that fundraising is not important, but I feel like I really attracts the interest of other students. I want to do something important, either in school or outside school. I think I would like to participate in something related to children orphaned or underpriveleged. However, it is not really a problem in my immediate community, how can I be more involved on a larger scale? National, global, and so any suggestions are appreciated!

Our youth leaders plan community projects throughout the year. Points of Light Foundation offers the curriculum that our youth leaders use.
