October Hunting Tactics

Turkey hunting success Scouts are good
Although Turkey's fall season has been open since 6 October, the DNR reminds hunters that many of the leftover fall turkey licenses are available for purchase from many of the management units of Wild Turkey. Licenses are still available for 12 of the 17 hunts that run through Nov. 14. Most of the remaining licenses are for private land only, but many general licenses that are valid both for public and private land, remains of two units: Unit M in the Upper Peninsula Unity and J, which includes Emmet, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Antrim, and Otsego counties. Fall Turkey seasons are used as a means of controlling populations of turkeys in areas where populations are high.

In the fall, turkeys spend most of their time feeding insects and mast crops like acorns. Find a good food source, where birds are congregating and learn the habits of birds. An important component for successful fall turkey hunting is the location of birds. Scout for tracks, fresh droppings and feathers. Good bird-watching areas in idle lands and forests and near trails for registration.
Play of the sounds of birds scratching in the leaves or listening to his "flock talk" as they come and go and rest. Flocks perch can produce a variety of "shouting", "clucks", "Kee-Kees" and "down". Once a flock has been located, hunting is a tactic to disperse the crowd. The approach of the flock within 50 yards and a wash of birds to disperse. A dispersed flock normally begin to regroup within 15 to 30 minutes, near the original point separation. Set up quickly here. Begin calling the turkeys by imitating the same sounds made by birds as the flock begins to reassemble. Turkeys will give the kee-kee lost call mixed with screaming and snaps. Reply to every turkey call heard with similar tone, pitch and rhythm. Using a decoy can also help to deceive the birds come over your location.
Successful hunters still and let the birds come to them. Being camouflaged not make you invisible. The movement is the greatest enemy of the turkey hunters. A Turkey can detect and react to movement 10 times faster than a human being. Although unmarked, are still a way unnatural in the forest. Do not try to stalk a turkey. First, the turkey or hen you are stalking can be another hunter. Second, your chances of success are slim. At best, might get a glimpse of tail feathers. Do not jump and turn into a turkey on behind. The possibility of getting a good shot is very thin. Be patient, stay still and let the bird pass.
Suppose another person is making all the sounds he hears. Many turkey hunters convincing callers. Always keep a safe distance. If a bird happens to be another hunter, who could be very dangerous. If another hunter is working a flock, do not interfere calling or scaring birds. Always give other hunters with the same respect you expect.
In the fall, both females and males are legal targets. Make sure the bird is within range of the shotgun and shoot in the head and neck only.
Know the capabilities of your firearm or bow and use it safely.
Be positive of your target. Once you pull the trigger, it's too late!
