The African hunting dog (Lycaon pictus) is a mammal of the Canidae family as it relates to the domestic dog. It is the only species of its genus – Lycaon. As its name implies, can only be found in Africa, especially in scrub savanna and other sparsely wooded. These dogs hunt in packs and prayer are the main Impala and other similar medium-sized ungulates. These dogs are very popular for its strength, as well as being highly intelligent hunters.

These Dogs have been observed hunting prey in relays, or even block, one that could be a potential escape route from the dam sad. His voice is unique, since it is characterized by an unusual chirping / squeaking sound. The reason that this race is now almost extinct, is their need for a large territory. They are also very vulnerable to attacks by their competitors direct, hyenas and lions, mainly because of its relatively small physical. Unlike other members of the family dog, hunting dog of Africa is difficult tamed.

These dogs are known to have a very complex social system, in which related adult members cooperate to produce a single litter of puppies each year. Most stocks are still more men than women because men are dogs in litters (which is quite unusual among mammals with this type of gender bias). The dog often regurgitate meat to other members of the group: young people, older dogs, as well as adults have been in order to prevent youth hunting during stays.

The approximate number of African hunting dogs is around 5,600. Most of this number live in the two remaining large populations related to the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania and the population is in northern Namibia, Botswana and eastern Europe. There are populations isolated living in Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

These dogs are reproduced at any time of year, but mating peaks between March and June. Litters can contain from two to 19 pups. The time between the birth is usually 12 to 14 months, although cases where the period was only 6 months have been found. The average gestation period is about 70 days and pups are born in most cases give an error abandoned by other animals such as those of the Aardvark.

Weaning takes place in about 10 weeks and 3 months after the den is abandoned and the pups are starting to run with the pack. At the age of 8 months, which have the ability to kill small prey, but they reach full capacity within 14 months or less (at this point, you can feed themselves). Sexual maturity is reached at age 14-18 months.

In conclusion, the African hunting dog is a very interesting race, but unfortunately the game on the edge of extinction. We strongly hope that this race (and other races in this dangerous position) will be saved from extermination.
