Poaching Vs Hunting

Proof is in the putting vs. pudding?

This phrase makes no sense , whether it is pudding or putting. The conventional form of the cliche is “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” There’s an argument an argument of
phrase “proof is in the putting/pudding.” I believe it is “putting” even though everyone thinks it is “pudding.” My memory is that it has to do with hunting, i.e. putting birds in a bag. An officer who charged a hunter with poaching said the “proof was in the putting.” Who’s right?

“The proof of the pudding is in the eating” comes from when documents were hidden in pies[fruit pies can be referred to as a pudding in the UK] the most famous being Jack Horner [yes he was a real person]also could have been the eating of poisoned fruit.
Today it means your cooking is only as good as it tastes
